Preparing to move into temporary accommodation

Most house moves involve changing location from one home to another, with no immediate plans of moving on any time soon. However, there are circumstances where – at the time of the move – you know it’s only going to be for a few weeks or months at most. That being so, do you really want to deal with the upheaval of moving all your belongings from House A to House B, knowing your be taking them all to House C in a couple of months’ time?

Here at Stokes Removals and Storage, many of our customers find themselves using temporary accommodation for one reason or another so, to help them and others like them, we’ve put together the following hints and tips.

Choose the right kind of temporary accommodation

If you already know you’re only going to be in temporary accommodation for two months while your home is being renovated (for instance) there’s no point in renting a place that requires a minimum 6-month lease. You may be lucky enough to have family or friends who can put you up for a few weeks but, if not, there are other short-term options.

Hotels, guest houses, and even AirBnB properties often offer deals for long-term (from their perspective) guests. If you explain the reason for needing an extended stay with them, you could well get a preferential rate. After all, they are saving on advertising costs and periods when the house or room would otherwise stand empty, so you have definite leverage in the discussion.

Only take the essentials

If you’re staying in temporary accommodation, you’re likely to have limited space compared to your own home, so pack accordingly. Take a few changes of clothes, your toiletries, your phone and laptop, and anything else that you can’t live without. Don’t worry about your music collection, your full wardrobe, or your games consoles. A minimalist existence for a month or two is not going to kill you.

Declutter

Taking only what you need can often show you just how much stuff you’ve accumulated over the years that you will likely never use any time soon (if ever). Why not take the opportunity to get rid of some of those items? Whether you’re moving home, travelling for university, or having your current home renovated, there’s never been a better time to make space in your life.

Use a personal storage unit

Assuming your temporary accommodation is the result of you being between homes (perhaps because of a real estate chain or a sudden change in personal circumstances), you’ll need somewhere for the rest of your belongings. Even a couple of months with your possessions stuffed into every nook and cranny of your short-term living solution is not good for your mental well-being. A self-storage unit is a great way to keep everything safe and secure for your added peace of mind. What’s more, with round-the-clock access, you can always collect anything you forgot that you needed while in temporary accommodation.
